He saw Joyce kneeling in the sand; her words incoherent from this far away, but it looked like she was speaking frantically. And it turned out Jonathan hadn’t run after Nancy, but to his mom instead. He was hunched over in front of her. It didn't make sense. Until Jonathan sat up.

Laying on his back, partially in his mother’s arms, was Will. He wasn't moving, at least it didn’t look like it from this far away. And the next thing Mike knew, he was dropping the flare gun his sister had given him into the sand and his feet were moving him

Summary
Things weren't supposed to go this badly.
When Maverick is shot down protecting Rooster, Phoenix tries in vain to stop Bradshaw from going after him. Rooster disobeys orders and goes off on his own to save Maverick, pushing Phoenix to lead the team home by herself.
That is easier said than done with two Bandits on their tail. While trying to give the team a chance to get away Dagger Three suffers a fatal blow, forcing Phoenix and Bob to eject and abandon the aircraft.
Battered, bruised, and stuck in enemy territory, Phoenix must keep herself and an injured Bob safe until they can be rescued. But again, that is easier said than done. Surviving a violent ejection itself was no small miracle, but the two aren't out of the woods yet.
Before the night is over, they'll have to deal with a number of challenges - from the dangers of a hostile environment to the far more terrifying concept of emotional vulnerability.
