At last, Kanda lifted his eyes to look at Allen’s face.
His nose and eyes were red from crying, cheeks too, either from chill or shame, and he stared determinedly at Kanda’s hardwood floor where water puddled. His too-big jacket hung off him in clumps, awkward and uncomfortable and soaking, and his white hair clung to his skin, drops sliding down his cheek and neck in a poor mimicry of his tears.
He looked, plain and simple, pathetic.

To be accurate, it wasn’t exactly that Yuu Kanda fell from heaven — he simply missed his footing and plummeted from the top of the stairs face-up. But he looked something like a falling star, tumbling down so strangely slow, his long black hair rippling like a dancer’s ribbon in the air.
Allen could’ve likely avoided him, and perhaps he should’ve. Kanda was taller and broader, and for all his sickliness, it was more likely than anything that Kanda would strike him at full force and they’d both be sent sprawling down the stairs. All it would’ve taken was a swift sidestep.
But Allen did not step away.
A weightless boy. A melancholy class president. A one-eyed liar. A wicked fast, long-legged phoenix of a girl. In a small town in an even smaller world, Allen Walker — charming, young, and only mostly human — seems to have an unwitting talent for attracting the supernatural, the strange, and the beautiful.
And few things in the world were more beautiful than Yuu Kanda.
This is a story about beasts, to be certain. But it's also a story about love.

He had given Kanda something he probably hadn’t deserved, and he done it with the most genuine smile Kanda had ever seen; it was as if he was grateful for the opportunity to liberate Kanda from his lifetime of loss, and at the time all Kanda could give in return was his own soft smile. Then Kanda realized that whatever little bit of life he had left he’d give to Allen - to saving him the way he’d saved Kanda.
