Not too long after being unfrozen after 70 years under ice, Steve Rogers goes to work for Nick Fury at SHIELD HQ in Washington DC. The missions start to roll in and Nick Fury assigns him a new backup when he finds himself in need of a skilled forward scout and sniper; a strange man with a metal arm and a mask, known only as The Soldier.

“You,” and Steve’s hands are brands, are vises against the wound where it’s spilling, where Bucky ran and leapt where Steve hadn’t even thought to look, where it’s Bucky’s body that’s failing, Bucky’s artery that’s leaking too fast to rightly heal, and it should’ve been Steve.

Summary
Steve’s heard people say that Captain America appeared in the future twice the man he had been before. That could be debated, of course, but it’s true that he’s still more or less whole. But Bucky...he arrived here fractured. It’s as if only a few fragments of him made the journey through those decades intact and the rest was shaken loose and left behind somewhere, scattered across time like shreds of cloth in a storm.
