Or : what if we take the popular “person A is drunk and asks person B to be their partner, person B laughs and answers by saying they are married already (without saying they are actually married to person A) and person A pouts” and add “what person B doesn’t know is that person A sees them interact with person C and thinks they are the significant other”

Nicolo looks up, eyes wide. “He was your comrade,” he says softly, with confusion but no judgment.
Yusuf shrugs. “He killed you.”
Nicolo arches a brow. “You’ve killed me four times. And I’ve killed you five.”
“That’s different,” Yusuf says, and prays Nicolo won’t press for an explanation of how it’s different.
Or: During the Third Crusade, Yusuf watches Nicolo die at the hands of someone who isn't him, and doesn't take it well.

“Yusuf?” Nicky breathes, and the man fires a blast into his chest.
Nile winces - it’s gory, messy, he’ll be down for awhile - before his words catch up to her, and she whips her head around to stare at the man holding a gun on her family.
She does recognize him, she realizes with a sinking feeling. She thought she’d just hadn’t had a dream about him in awhile, but she never made the connection between a man going about his mundane business in a store with the screaming one trapped under the ocean that had been haunting her. She just thought he was a random face plucked from her memories.
