And Jackie kind of panics, and makes some bad decisions. Like skipping town with her wanted-for-murder best friend.
They head west, because this is America, and that's the direction you're supposed to go when the law is on your tail.
Soon, they're famous. A real life Thelma and Louise. Or a latter-day Bonnie and Clyde, if you prefer.
Where they're going, neither is really sure. But God help anyone who gets in their way.

There’s an obvious sigh of relief on the other end of the phone, it makes Shauna wonder how many people he’s cycled through trying to pawn Lottie off, “Thank you, Shauna. I appreciate it.” He says it like she’s just agreed to dogsit for him, like he didn’t just ask her to take in his daughter. Maybe that’s all Lottie’s ever been, anyway, just a dog with no master, seeking shelter wherever it’s given.

Months and numbers stop mattering when you’re surrounded by indeterminate miles of pure, utter nothingness, so this month and number don’t matter to her one bit. Not anymore. She’s expired. She’s gone.

Guess there's some fucked up kind of camaraderie that comes from everyone getting naked together.
Jackie calls it team bonding, like it's a trip to the bowling alley or a rager at Lottie’s house, and not something that makes Shauna feel like she’s in a literal prison.

He’s never really considered it before, not seriously anyway. Sure, he’d be blind to miss how close they are, and he’s always known that their friendship is a little different, but he’d never really thought about whether there might secretly be something else going on. Something other than friendship, that is.
He supposes it might explain some things. Like the way that Shauna always glares daggers at him every time he so much as holds Jackie’s hand, or the way that Jackie will cancel plans with him the second Shauna so much as hints that she might want to hang out.
But like. He’s pretty sure there’s nothing going on there. He might not be the most observant guy in the world, but he’s pretty sure if his girlfriend was secretly like, in love with her best friend, he’d know about it.
