Summary
Steve had a bad feeling, and this wasn't the first time it had happened.
For as long as he could remember, he had always had hunches. Hunches about events that hadn't even happened yet but warned him before the shoe could drop. He was used to them. To the bad omens. To the anxiety they brought.
Maybe, that's why he was as tense as a coiled spring when they entered Hawkins Lab, as gray as decayed as the rest of the Upside Down. But not even a hunch could have prepared him for what happened that day. He couldn't have braced himself for the party splitting up. He couldn't have braced himself for an argument with Dustin, much less the boy's violent reaction at him bringing Eddie into the conversation.
He couldn't have expected to crack his head open into the ground, nor the world that waited for him when he opened his eyes once again. Neither the spider that bit him, or the powers that would later bring him.
And when this peculiar world welcomed him, he couldn't help but wonder.
Was that Munson? In a big sign? Wearing a hero-like costume?
And why on Earth was he blond?

“Legolas’s hair is never described properly in the books,” Steve thinks aloud after putting the seven down after moving a three to an open spot he hadn’t seen. “He’s mostly described as being dressed in green and brown, and yeah, Lucas is right, his head was described as dark, like, once but it was night so most of their heads would be dark. Not to mention,” he continues, blissfully unaware of the silence that’s fallen since he started talking, “there’s the whole continuity thing about the different types of elves and their hair color. Like, Galadriel’s type of elves were meant to be blonde but Elrond’s were meant to be dark hair? Plus there’s the fact that Arwen’s hair is black –”
Steve suddenly realizes that the sound of teenagers arguing is gone. He looks up from his game to find the entire room staring at him, ranging from awe (Dustin) to disbelief (Mike) to something that makes Steve think of girls in high school adjusting their shirts so that he could see them almost flashing him (Eddie.) “Oh,” Steve says.

Summary
The mall is destroyed. El’s lost her powers. Billy’s dead. So is Hopper. Steve is probably fucked up mentally for life, but what else is new? Steve has a pretty good thing going. He has kids to take care of, an awkward lesbian to advise. Max needs a big brother. Hawkins is his home, and Steve can’t just leave. Not while he’s still needed. He knows one day he won’t be. But for now, it’s enough.
Or: the Harringtons sell their house before the real estate market goes belly-up. Hawkins has been going downhill for years, anyway. His parents give Steve a choice: move with them and finally take that job at his dad’s company or get left behind. For Steve, it wasn’t much of a choice at all. He may not have a house anymore, but his BMW’s backseat has served as a bed plenty of times already. No one has to know. The party has enough problems to worry about.
Or: Eddie Munson worms his way into Steve’s sorry little life months before Vecna rears his ugly head.

A Pre-Season 4/Season 4 rewrite with Family Video employee Eddie, Mama Bear Steve, Vecna-ed Steve, plenty of angst, more than one sexuality crisis, Wayne adopting every sad teen he finds, and a happy ending for everyone (except Jason and Vecna). Trigger warnings at the start of every chapter.
