Summary
“Hypothesis,” Wilbur mutters, all but breathless. “If Charlie isn’t the one the Beast is looking for, then - then he’ll come back, just like I did.”
Tommy thinks about running when Phil and Wilbur aren’t looking, just going and going until he can’t anymore.
Wilbur pulls a trembling arm around his shoulders. They’re both sweaty and breathing hard, but Tommy collapses into the half-hug like he needs it to survive. He buries his face into Wilbur’s neck and tries not to cry out of frustration.
“Charlie will come back,” Wilbur whispers into Tommy’s hair. “He has to. Charlie’s going to come back, and everything’ll be fine.”

Summary
On the fifth day of the apocalypse, Wilbur picks up a fever and a child, in that order.
In which Sam finally gets around to moving the Egg, and this results in the worst kind of disaster. None of that is relevant to Wilbur, though; all he knows is that he's injured, he can't find anyone else on this server, and the strange red vines everywhere are probably bad news.
And then, he finds a baby zombie piglin, and though he knows himself to be the worst sort of villain, he's not about to abandon this child to die.

Tommy has graduated into The Explorers Federation's ranks, assigned to his first mission he meets his crew for the two month long research expedition. These 3 aliens will be with him every single day as they explore Kinoko, a dead and dying planet with thick red soil and two suns.
It would be crazy to go through all the training and the tests and the wait required to be selected for one of these exploration trips to just fall through. There were thousands of applicants and none of them would turn down a trip like this, no one in their right mind.
Tommy should have said no.

The story does not truly start here.
No fairytales ever do– no, stories like these often begin in simpler places. Simpler stories, ones that belong to the people and not the kings. Stories told to children as they’re tucked into bed, gentle warm hands soothing their brows and speaking with low tones as they relay the stories of grandeur and magic. Fairytales are often piled upon– one magic spell becomes two. A mother changes the prince’s name to her own dear son. Tommy was once told stories like these.

Summary
The real world is fragile in a way that makes Wilbur Soot want to lay down in a dark room and never have to participate in society ever again. Things like capitalism, injustice, and the separation of Pangea aren’t quite as mind-numbingly terrifying, oddly enough, because he knows he can’t fix those things. They’re scary, but the only thing scarier than not having control is knowing you do. At the end of the day, the things that rot away his insides and take hold inside of him are his father’s disappointment, the fact that he hasn’t seen his best friend in over a year, and his little brother’s hero worship that has begun to feel like suffocation.

He plants carrots instead of potatoes to try and hide from an unmarked grave his weary body was never buried in, but there are still potatoes in his garden and there is still a grave and still a body. Tommy does not like to think of the past, but he can’t move on from it either. He is not a ghost, but he is and he is a shadow as well. There are carrots where there didn’t used to be, but some things never seem to change. Potatoes, for one. Wilbur, for another. Tommy, himself, for a third.
“I don’t think we’re capable of it,” he says. “That’s our problem.”
