When the girls turn the corner and spot their mother, Mai comes to a stop, reaching out to catch Maki’s wrist. She’s surprised Maki’s shoulder doesn’t pop out of its socket with the suddenity of it all considering Maki ran a few steps past her.
She says nothing, just stares at Mai as she gulps.

It’s rare for her mother to act like this. Even at the age of six, Maki knows this. She knows there’s something wrong with her and Mai, and she knows that her mother cannot love them the same way someone like Naoya’s mother loves him. But she’s also only six, and so when her mother leaves her with crumbs of affection, Maki holds onto them without question.
It’s ok if it’s only within the privacy of their own bathroom. It’s ok if she at least gets to feel her mother’s touch when she washes Maki’s back.

Summary
Typically, Nanami Kento did not think of his life in separate stages but rather as an accumulation of events that led him to where he is today.
If he were to go even further than that, he’d say that most of these events were marked by loss. Whether it be a big loss, like losing a friend, or small, like minor inconveniences throughout the day, these events all centered around the loss of something. Loss is what makes someone an adult, after all, and Kento was not the child who had walked into the Tokyo school shoulder to shoulder with Haibara Yu all those years ago. His life was defined by loss, and had been so up until now.
Up until Itadori Yuuji.
