    Summary

Shane and Ilya once knew each other in what feels like another life. Years later, Shane has transitioned, buried his past and finally embraced his truest self. He comes to McGill to play on the men’s hockey team—only to find his roommate is Ilya Rozanov.

    “Sorry—um.” Shane swallowed. “I’m Shane.”

Something passed across Ilya’s face, quick and unreadable. Shane’s pulse spiked, thudding loud in his ears. Did he know? If Ilya recognized him—if something clicked—what would stop him from telling the coaches? What would stop him from telling everyone?
Then Ilya smoothed it away, the moment gone as if it had never existed.

“Huh,” he said. “Funny. I used to know a Shane. Pretty girl. Good at hockey.”

Shane’s eyes widened. His mouth went dry. Was Ilya fucking with him?

    “Oh—um. I—”

“Relax,” Ilya cut in, lips curling into something almost amused, almost sharp. “You are very pretty, too.”

    Summary

Shane sends a message without fully thinking it through, are you disappointed in me?

No. Comes through immediately. I told you, good game to watch. It makes me happy to see you lose once in a while. I think you need to be brought down a notch.

Shane’s face crumples with confusion. His heart flutters but his nostrils still flare with annoyance. Rozanov isn’t disappointed with him. He’ll ignore the last two sentences of that text. Although he thinks he knows what's coming after them.

I can take you down a notch. Send address. Rozanov texts.

    Summary

After Dennis compliments Robby’s bike, Robby offers him a ride home before leaving for his sabbatical, and Dennis is more than happy to agree to any plan that includes the words “riding” and “Robby.”

    — Well, — Robby said, — you haven’t driven … but have you ever ridden?

The question was innocent enough. Still, Dennis felt his face heat up, his thoughts going to wrong places … again.

Dennis took half a second to organize his thoughts, still standing there with the helmet on, before answering. — Once or twice.

    — Good — Robby said easily. He patted the seat behind him. — Then get on.

    Summary

Dennis Whitaker has spent his life living by rules he learned in Nebraska—faith, discipline, and the unyielding expectations of family and church. Even now, in the relentless chaos of the ER, he clings to his habits and prayers, seeking order in a world that rarely makes sense, and praying for a heart he fears he cannot keep pure.

Then there’s Robby, his steady, careful attending, whose presence unsettles Dennis in ways he cannot name. Each brief touch, each moment of attention, forces him to confront feelings he was taught to bury, desires that conflict with everything he’s been told is right.

Dennis doesn’t know if he can reconcile faith and longing, guilt and hope—but in the spaces between emergencies, he begins to learn that even the most careful hearts can ache, and even the most disciplined souls can find grace.

    OR

Dennis is a traumatized boy who craves Robby’s comfort but refuses to accept it until one of them finally stops being stubborn and gives in.
