Summary
Branch knew that his brothers would have to leave. He'd be stupid to think that they could stay forever. They had their own lives to live and homes that they made for themselves, they couldn't just leave that behind and Branch didn't want them to. That didn't mean he wanted them to leave. He knows that they never had any plans to stick around, they'd made that clear to him, but he wasn't ready to say goodbye.
It's worse when it looks like they plan to try to be a family together. Without him.

JD’s smile turned stricken. Branch turned away, fiddling with Poppy’s hand. If he’d had it his way, they never would’ve even stepped foot in his bunker, but, well, he didn’t get his way.

Brozone decides to spend some time together, to ‘get to know each other again’, and it happens to be spent in Branch’s bunker. In doing so, Branch’s brothers finally learn why his hair is quite a bit duller than they remember.

“You were Grey for months?” Floyd questions, his voice coming out strained and breathless. The immediate older brother felt disgusted with himself, he’s been so sure grandma could take care of him. He supposed she had, but how the hell had none of them ever thought about what would happen during the yearly Trollstice?!
Branch looks to the ground, paws rubbing and fiddling with themselves in a way to release excess emotions. “Years, actually… twenty years.” He replies numbly.
