“My friend Steve would really love that song.” She talks about him in present tense, like he’s still there, one phone call away. Like that, she doesn’t have to explain to anyone that she lost a friend when she was a teenager. To whoever gets to hear about him, it seems obvious that Steve is still alive. It’s not denial, Robin’s very much aware of the truth. It’s just nicer this way. She doesn’t want the pity. She wants the smiles, and ‘he should come to the show’ as a reply. Like that, Steve is always invited, always welcome, in every aspect of her life.Robin decides that it doesn’t matter how limited the time she got with Steve was. She wants him to be a memory of joy. She needs him to be. The stupid polaroid ends up on her fridge, so every morning, when she makes breakfast, she sees him smile at her. And she wants it to stay exactly that way, as the years go by, and she gets older. When she finds a woman who loves her, someone she’ll spend her life with. Steve will still be there, like some kind of guardian angel.

But Steve was shaking by the time they pulled up to the station. Drenched in a cold sweat that plastered his hair to his forehead and his sweater to his shoulder blades.
“Go grab Robin,” he said to Dustin. He was white-knuckling the steering wheel and he was far too pale. “Tell her I might need her to drive.”
Robin didn’t know how to drive, but it was a moot point, because Steve wasn’t getting out of the driver’s seat either. She opened the door and they looked at each other in silence, and then he said, “Get in.”
And he drove them back to his house.

Summary
While down in the tunnels, the tunnels close, leaving Steve and the kids trapped. Now, they have to wait for the others to find them. Steve promised he’d keep these kids safe, so that’s what he’s going to do. After all, he’s a damn good babysitter. Even in creepy Upside Down tunnels that are collapsing more by the minute.
