"Wave goodbye, Lu Guang," Li Tianchen practically spits his name out. "You lying piece of shit."

Wait. No. Not yet. Don't take him.

But, once again, Lu Guang is out of time. Always, always out of time. The spotlight flickers out with a faint pop, and Cheng Xiaoshi is gone.

Or, an alternate/extended scene to S2E10 (Improvise). Because there was more angst to be had there.

“I’m sorry. This isn’t fair, but I don’t know how I feel about you yet. I can’t make any promises. Can you wait for me?”

Cheng Xiaoshi throws him a languid smile. “Of course. Don’t you know? I’m pretty good at waiting for people.”

In the original timeline, Cheng Xiaoshi falls first. Many timelines later, he’s still waiting.

    Summary

Lu Guang’s conducting degree is one year away. All he has to do is stay the course: go to class, mark his scores, practice four hours a day, keep his technique flawless. Then he crosses paths with Cheng Xiaoshi—a naturally talented prodigy who plays violin like he’s breaking the rules on purpose. All tattoos, piercings, and a grin sharp enough to make Lu Guang forget himself.

    “You’re a pianist, aren’t you?”
    “Conductor.”
    “Pianist with a stick, then.”

    Idiot.

He should be the opposite of Lu Guang’s type. But instead, he can't seem to get him out of his head, and suddenly the future he thought was fixed starts to shift under his feet.

    Summary

Cheng Xiaoshi listens to the silence, watches as dust mites float across an apartment devoid of colour, impersonal and cold.

There are worse fates in the world for those who live. But this on its own, for people like Cheng Jiawei, for people like Cheng Xiaoshi—this sort of loneliness is enough to be excruciating.

"Lu Guang," Cheng Xiaoshi asks. "What does home mean to you?"

He thinks of sandalled feet, the warm hands that had held him that quiet September night, and wishes he'd been brave enough to ask what exactly Lu Guang had meant by his words that day.

If I left and the world went on, would anyone even notice me gone?

In which a client's request forces Cheng Xiaoshi to confront the terrifying ordeal of what it means to love, grieve, and find your way home.

    Summary

Cheng Xiaoshi spends the next several minutes just staring at the photograph, his finger running gently down the curve of Lu Guang's sunlit features. His mother's voice sounds from the back of his head.

The photograph is a window into the photographer's soul. Look, baobei, what does this photo tell you about the person who took it? What emotions do they feel?

Attraction. Longing. Desire. It might as well be written in Sharpie over Lu Guang's face, big bold characters in Cheng Xiaoshi's handwriting.

Fuck. He really has been blind.

Over the course of a year, Cheng Xiaoshi learns to see what's been right in front of him this entire time. (Or, familiarity as a love language.)
