Barely awake, Shadow pushed himself up on his elbows, the bed creaking under him. He squinted, looking at the glowing digital clock on the nightstand. It read 4 AM.
The place beside him was empty.
Shadow lifted his hand and touched the other half of their double bed. The blanket on that side was tucked in, its surface smooth and even. The pillow was fluffed up, as if no one had slept here in the first place.
"Espio?" Shadow called out.
