It was fixed on a glass tank full of liquid, with a man suspended inside. He was curled in on himself with his hands tucked close to his face like a fetus in utero. His face was familiar. More than familiar. Stone had seen that same side profile in the mirror countless times by now. His body went cold.
Before his death, Robotnik had just enough time to create a clone of Stone. He left them both feeling angry and betrayed on Earth. Stone has a talk with himself.

"It's just, it's muscle memory. Loving him, I mean." He picked up the cup from earlier and sniffed it. He pulled a face and poured it down the sink. He washed it out. "It's like moving houses. I knew where all the furniture was so I wouldn't fumble around in the dark, making noise and waking him up. And now I don't. The whole universe shifted half a foot to the left."
After Robotnik's death, Stone tried to hold it together. He kept up with his work. He befriended a stray cat. He tried, but he couldn't. He needed him back, whatever it took.

He'd fallen in love with Robotnik a million times, and one of the first times was when he mentioned how stupid New Year's was, really, and Robotnik had gone on an impassioned rant whilst Stone encouraged him, until they were both grinning in the light of shared scorn.

Summary
Ivo hates winter.
The festive clamor is too much on his senses. Winter should be peaceful and quiet, yet he's constantly bombarded with tinsel and shimmering baubles and trinkets, and so much green and red and white he could choke on it.
At least his labs are safe from such trifling things.
That is, he thought so, until he catches Stone stringing fir garlands around his desk and rummaging through a small box of decorations set lightly upon its surface.
"Stone," he hisses, "just what do you think you're doing, bringing that kind of insipient frippery into my labs?"

After a self-imposed mission gone ever-so-slightly wrong — not that the Doctor would ever admit any of his plans ever going wrong, Stone thinks with no small amount of amusement — Stone realizes that he and the Doctor only have one real option if they want to evade their pursuers. And between pretending to kiss his boss in the oversized coat closet and letting themselves get caught, Stone knows which one is infinitely preferable.
...even if Stone's real preference would be to actually kiss the Doctor. Beggars can't be choosers, and all that.
