He felt her all time. Every moment, everywhere. It was like when he lost her the first time, except something felt sickeningly more concrete this time around. He saw her in girls that snorted when they laughed. He saw her in girls who were growing their hair out, which El was so excited to do. He saw her in tattoos and waffles and Miami Vice and purple eyeshadow and pop music.

She could have asked him something mundane and business related that he wouldn’t question, like to check his car tomorrow for the matchbox in case she just dropped it, or to remind her details of what he’d seen on the subway. She could have pretended to have accidentally sent him a text she meant for someone else. She could have reminded him that the things she’d confessed on Coney Island, what little he may have gleaned, was not for public consumption and if he leaked it to anyone, he’d be wishing he were back in the safety of jail.
