All things considered, The Hard Deck was probably one of the safest joints around.
It was familiar, nostalgic but updated, and he could easily lose track of time in the cozy atmosphere. He and Mav had made themselves at home in a little booth hours ago. His ass was numb, but the leather was warm, and the cushions were forgiving on his aging back. Bottles and peanut shells littered the table between the two of them.

Jim looked at the front door. There were vague smudges and scratches left on the aged paint, and he wondered if they were the same ones that were there the day he left. His hand came up to ring the doorbell and stopped. Still, he wasn’t sure what he was waiting for, but he pressed it anyways. He could hear the tune ring through the walls.

Sonny’s still dressed in his racing jumpsuit when Kate finds him. It’s unzipped, and the arms of it hang down around his legs, which are curled toward his stomach in the fetal position. The white undershirt he has on is almost entirely sweated through, and he’s got his hands up over his head, clamped over everything like he’s trying to protect himself. His eyes are shut tight, his body tense.

Summary
Sonny Hayes is a flight risk. He disappears after saving Ruben's team, but after a race gone wrong, he's forced to reach out to his situationship / ex-teammate / rich friend for help. When he finds out that Ruben faces criminal charges from a faulty Apex car, Sonny finds himself swept back up into it all again despite his rule for no repeats. Somewhere along the way, Sonny might just find out what putting down roots looks like after all.
