Neuvillette was about to question him on it when Wriothesley finally spoke. His voice was quiet, almost drowned by the muffled sounds of the people mingling together in the ballroom. “Unfortunately, Monsieur, it will only stop if everyone thinks you’re taken.”
“Which I am not,” replied Neuvillette. Wriothesley was right. And since Neuvillette could not – would not – entertain a romantic relationship, then he was doomed to suffer through those endless attempts at earning his favor.
Wriothesley huffed fondly. He said just as quietly, as if his words were a secret for them only; “I said if everyone thinks you are unavailable. It wouldn’t have to be real, just that the tabloids think it is.”

"What should we call it?"
"A meeting! It was a working meeting!"
"Ah," Clorinde nodded, "the Chief Justice gave you the file. And it took a whole dinner by candlelight in a fancy restaurant to do that?"
Wriothesley is certain that his soulmark is not mutual. So he rejects his soulmate's advances.

Neuvillette was stunned by his words, his face solemn. He left it at that and nodded, looking at the skies as he submerged himself in his own thoughts.
(Or an au in which Sigewinne is so done with the Chief Justice and the Duke ignoring their feelings for one another so she plots against the two.)

Summary
