They’ve always been close, Sanford and Deimos. Too close, maybe.
But lately, Deimos can’t stop noticing the quiet things.
The warmth.. the stillness... the ache he won’t name.
And the closer he gets to the truth, the sharper it starts to hurt.- Language:

He was reading this wrong, wasn’t he? He was reading everything wrong. This entire time. He wanted to throw up. Of course Deimos didn’t feel the same. Maybe he was leading him on. Maybe he knew, and found it funny.
Deimos was laughing at HIM, wasn’t he.

It’s scarce work, clients are fickle and tend not to be patient, they’ll drop him for someone with better availability if he lags on a project. He picks through offers, grabs the short and easy stuff and gets single digit payments for transcribing videos, correcting software patches, helping some kid on the other side of the planet with their math homework.
When his rig was fresher, he did bigger stuff. Better stuff.
Less legal stuff.
And that’s what that message was about.

Summary
Fifty yards from base stands the staircase, the wood old and rotted, leading up into nothingness. All manner of urban legends exists around them, some considering them bad omens and others claiming they were portals to the Other Place. Kids learned from a young age not to go anywhere near them when they appeared, lingering in the desert for minutes or even days before disappearing without a trace. Bad things happen to people that climb the staircases, that's what he'd been told by a child the first time he saw one. She couldn't have been more than eight, but spoke with the urgency of someone who had already seen far too much in that little town he and Sanford had stopped in years ago. Much too old for someone her age, real fear in her eyes when Deimos had taken a step forward anyways and she'd grabbed his wrist to stop him, begging him not to go.
Curiosity has had him in a chokehold ever since.
