“M-my—the—my chain, Dream,” George says, pulling a hand from Dream’s hold to wipe at his eyes. “It’s—fuck—”
“We couldn’t find his chain, dude,” Sapnap says. He’s hovering by the doorway. “Looked everywhere.”
[Or, George loses his chain and, simultaneously, his mind.]

“I thought it would go away,” George cries. “It’s not going away, Dream, and I—” His voice catches on a hiccup and he turns his head to rub his eyes, cheek resting on the damp fabric clothing Dream’s chest.
Dream holds him tighter. “Breathe, sweetheart,” he says, and his voice sounds rougher than it had ten minutes ago. “I’ve got you.”
“Dream, I—it hurts.”
“I know, baby, I know.”
[Or, There are demons that eat away at George—they come and go—and for so long he’s dealt with them physically alone, with only the words of Dream or other friends in his ears. But now he’s in Florida. Now he’s in Dream’s arms, being constantly reminded that Dream is there, Dream has him, and he is loved.]

George doesn't know what to say to him, not after they were just bickering about sugar scrubs and joking about toothpastes and soaps and scents. It's not too far, it's just unexpected—like an arrow has shot through their protection of ice and shattered below their bare feet.
Now they drip. Bleeding would be too painful for them. And these words from Dream's mouth are warmed tones and far from dull. If he bled from Dream's tongue, it would kill him.

Dream lost the ability to breathe. He slumped over his desk, hands crushing his headphones as close to his ears as they could press. “I…I don’t know. Maybe.” The words were right there, sitting heavy on his tongue. He had to balance them precariously, speak around them so they wouldn’t fall from his lips. “Maybe.”
Five times George is too far away for Dream to say “I’m in love with you,” and one time he’s right in front of him.
