“Now, close your eyes. Try not to think about anything.”
Stede wonders what kind of game this is, exactly. Ed’s skin is warm as ever under his hand and it’s silly, but he fancies he can feel the small crosses and pin-prick stars as warmer still, heating up against his palm.
The pulse in Ed’s thumb beats in time with the pulse in Stede’s wrist.
Ed starts to hum. It’s a low rumble, gently swooping between deep tones; the design under Stede’s hand gets hotter and hotter. It feels red and sharp. Stede feels the vibration of Ed’s humming inside him as though it’s coming from his own chest.
Stede’s eyes are closed but he sees—feels—knows the room around him is receding. The walls are rushing away. The gentle rocking isn’t the Revenge riding the ocean swell, but their bed floating amongst waves. He can smell a sharp sting of salt and feel a biting wind on his cheeks.
Ed speaks, but the humming doesn’t stop. “Can you see it?”
He can.

“That’s a fuckin’ ridiculous idea,” Ed snaps, because he can’t contradict the angry, sad, horny descriptor. Boy’s got that part down pretty accurate.
“Yes, it is!” Stede says. “Where on earth did you come up with something like that?”
Frenchie jumps in to answer this one. “Buttons told us a story about his mum tying him and his little sister together when they’d fight, til they made up.”
“Oh, and we take advice on interpersonal relations from whatever ocean-dwelling cryptid raised Buttons now, do we?”

Summary
Ed had been very sweet when the physical aspect of their relationship began, and insisted upon taking things slow in recognition of how new it was for Stede. He was going to let Stede lead, he said, and assured him they would only ever go as far as he asked to and no further. It was really quite a darling moment, Ed being so sincere and gentle about it.
As much as Stede enjoyed Ed showing him such care and reverence, he hated it within about 30 seconds of the next time they kissed. Because Stede wanted everything, anything, and didn’t have the words to say, didn’t even know if there were words in existence for some of the things he wanted to do, and Ed was going to be patient and loving and absolutely bloody torturous until Stede could say what he wanted out loud, apparently. Which was rather unfair, but he didn’t know the words to express that either.

Summary
Members of his crew taking some relief in each other doesn't change the path Stede’s life has taken. He has long decided that deciphering these matters is not important or proper, or even relevant when everyone he knows who experienced such things in youth married eventually anyway. Stede is certainly beyond the point of his life wherein intimate matters are of consequence to him. He is here for an adventure, not a love story.
Then, he meets Blackbeard.

Stede realizes dimly that Ed’s hands are moving ceaselessly on his head. The frenetic jangling is nonstop, and Stede thinks of folklore, the healing divinity of bells. Thinks of the bells chasing away spirits, storms, disasters, his own made of shame and fear, and Ed’s made of much darker stuff. He works harder because Ed needs him, because this is what he has to offer, his mouth and his heart and his resolve, his unmitigated determination to bring Ed back from the brink, bell ringing a symphony as Ed’s soul is called back screaming to life.
