Summary
Three lost glimpses into the life of Daniel Molloy: 2018, 1996, and 1974.
He spent most of that year high. He spent the rest of it all different sorts of hungover. Sweating and throwing up, knocking back handfuls of aspirin that didn’t help, staying up all night bouncing off the walls and rambling nonsense into his tape recorder that he played back when he was halfway sober hoping to find a gem of hidden genius and getting confronted with the hallucinating delusions of a coked-up lunatic instead. He sleepwalked and had nightmares. He woke up choking on his own vomit as cold hands forced him over onto his side. This happened more than once. This happened more than twice. He had dreams which weren’t nightmares where he killed himself and then woke up dead with cold and lovely lips against his throat. His days were a haze. His nights were clear crystal color when he wasn’t too high to function; when he was just high enough to be the fun and pliant toy he was supposed to be; when he was sober enough to still get hard for his own personal demon incubus who came and slaughtered whoever he might have tricked into his bed that night as a pitiful offering of human sacrifice to his vengeful hating god.

Summary
Armand, Daniel, and the issue of sex now that Armand can no longer read Daniel’s mind.
Daniel gave up on him. “Jesus, whatever. I was just trying to say you could still boss me around if you wanted to, instead of this weird fake I’m-so-powerless power play you’ve been pulling these last few weeks, but if I can’t be trusted—”
“If you were trying to make a sexual request for something you wanted, then you should have simply said so, and not pretended you were doing it for my benefit,” Armand said coldly.
Daniel had reddened. “I was just offering,” he said grouchily. “I can tell you don’t like that you can’t read my mind anymore. You don’t believe me, but I mean it—I will tell you if I don’t like something.” He was giving Armand a keen look, one of those looks Armand did not much like.

Summary
After Armand turned him and fled, Daniel stole some of his stuff from the Dubai penthouse.
Two years later, having found Armand and been disturbed by the state of him, Daniel follows up on those leads.
During the red-eye to Venice he dreamed. He dreamed of Armand’s back, and of his shadow. The shadow lay long and dark behind him. Armand was walking away from him but not getting any farther, even though Daniel was not moving. This was the side of himself that Armand could not see. Daniel saw it, but he couldn’t understand it. He tried to catch up but could get no closer. He tried to call Armand’s name and couldn’t. Turn around! he wanted to shout. Look at me! And then suddenly Armand did. First he was in profile, perpendicular to him, and Daniel was afraid. I didn’t mean it, he tried to say—I didn’t mean it, I didn’t want to hurt you, I’m sorry. Then Armand was facing him, and touched him with his eyes.
