A fill for the Hobbit Kink-Meme
Prompt: AU Thorin witnesses Bilbo using the ring and supports his use of it. At least before an accident causes it to fall in the fire and bring ancient writing across the band. After discovering what the ring really is the party decides to halt their current mission to destroy the ring before it regains it's true power. Bilbo thinks he'll be useless without it but Thorin believe otherwise. Because of this everything changes not just the fate of the ring but their friendship morphs into something else.

'Thorin and co. along with Bilbo and Gandalf as spies! Perhaps Bilbo is a retired secret service agent and Gandalf is his former handler? Or maybe Bilbo is a hacket? Thorin as an exiled prince of some country, trying to retake it? The ring as nuclear codes?
I don't know, I just want a spy AU. Can be cracky or serious.
Any pairing, but I do have a liking for Thorin/Bilbo and Bilbo/Bofur.'
Bilbo Baggins, codenamed Burglar, has been happily retired for the past three years. That is, until his old handler turns up on his doorstep with twelve strangers and another former agent, Thorin (codenamed Oakenshield), who lost an important piece of technology to a faction known as Red Dragon and its leader Smaug. Now Thorin and his crew are on a mission to retrieve Arkenstone from Smaug before he can finish decrypting the files and they want Bilbo.

I took a prompt on the kink meme and ran with it further than requested. Prompt was:
At some point on the journey, things get a little ugly and battle is done. Bilbo, who still isn't terrific with a sword, is told to hang back or stay somewhere safe. (Or maybe he's guarding the ponies, whatevs.)
Just before going with them, Bofur takes his hat off. And puts it on Bilbo's head. Because these are the two things he wants to keep safe.
So, here are the many times Bofur gave Bilbo his hat to keep him safe and happy, and the one time Bilbo took it to make Bofur feel safe and happy.
