Mike offered a smile, crisp in the dark that covered them like pitch snowfall. The other couldn't help but return the expression, lips curling around his teeth like a secret. He felt brave tonight. Courage radiated off of his bones, translated into shaky fingers and rapid heartbeats. Maybe it was finally time.

El furrows her brow. She’s fallen into step with him, a few paces behind the rest of the Party. “Anyways. I wanted to tell you I figured it out.”
“Figured what out?”
“Why you don’t like Jennifer.”
“I already told you that, remember?” Mike complains. “When you grilled me about it earlier?”
El ignores him and carries on, looking pleased with herself. “You don’t like her because you are jealous. You want to be Will’s girlfriend.”
Will Byers is dating Jennifer Hayes, and it's ruining Mike Wheeler's life.

Summary
Anonymous letters, a suspiciously knowing look, and a chocolate kiss. What the fuck is going on?
“Do you want a kiss?” He asks, voice sounding so casual that Will has to question if it’s forced.
He blinks. Then blinks again, registers the words, and flinches a step back. The heel of his shoe hits the locker behind him.
“I— Do I what?” Will sputters.
“Do you want a kiss?” He repeats, like that’s a normal thing to say to your best friend who is a boy.
Again, “What?”
Mike raises a closed fist up to Will’s face, so close that his eyes cross slightly to focus on it. Slowly, like he’s purposefully dragging this on, Mike unfurls his fingers. There, in the center of his palm, sits a small, silver-foil wrapped chocolate.What the hell.
; It’s Valentine’s Day. Will is going to shoot himself soon, seriously. It’d be easier than trying to understand why Michael Wheeler is acting like that.

One month ago, if you had asked Will Byers what he’d do if Mike Wheeler threaded his fingers through his hair, looked him dead in the eyes, and started leaning in for a kiss, he wouldn’t have said this.
He wouldn’t have said he’d be staring right back into those yawning dark eyes, one hand on Mike’s waist, the other against his cheek. There wouldn’t have been any lightning in his veins or blood rushing in his ears.
He wouldn’t have said that Mike Wheeler would be tilting his head in the opposite direction, eyes widening just the slightest as if asking permission, his mouth slightly parted.
He wouldn’t have imagined it at all.

Summary
If Mike were to be questioned about what happened earlier, he would say that he didn’t mean for it to happen at all.
And, like, yeah, he’s not lying or anything. He really wasn’t planning on kissing his best friend straight on the mouth in a valiant attempt to shut him up, but saying that he didn’t mean for it to happen implies that it was a mistake, accidental, unthinking, even; and that’s–well–that’s not strictly true, either.
