Summary
It had been a hard year for Geralt to say the least.
It was only his third year alone on the path and the roads of the Continent had not treated the young witcher well. Most of the year he spent with little coin to his name, being cheated out of more contracts than he would like to admit, and being left to camp in the rain on more than one occasion.
Of course this shouldn’t be a problem for a witcher. They had been trained for this since childhood, the world was cruel but thus is life. He was built for endurance as were his fellow Wolves. They were the few to survive the trials after all.
This however did not take into account that witchers, despite common misconceptions, could feel emotion. And feel it Geralt did.

Geralt had first noticed the faint scent of illness trailing Jaskier a few days ago. One part bitter, one part sickly-sweet, it warned of the storm brewing within the bard’s body, and so Geralt had kept a careful eye on him, waiting for symptoms to appear.
But strangely, none had, despite the scent only becoming more prominent with the passing time. They’d been walking all day, and he hadn’t heard so much as a throat-clearing.
Jaskier, meanwhile, was pretty sure he’d caught a miserable cold. His throat had begun to ache and scratch no matter how many times he sipped water, there was a painful ache in his sinuses and temples, and an infuriating tickle at the top of his lungs that was begging him to cough. But thus far, he had been resolutely ignoring the symptoms. No sense making a big to-do over nothing, after all.
