    “Is that—?”

Maxwell doesn’t finish his sentence, nor does he have to. In black and white, barely identifiable, are two faces in profile. In profile, Olethra realises, because they’re kissing one another. Like a lot. Intimately.

“Oh my god,” she says, reaching out blindly to clutch at Max’s sleeve. “Did you…?”

His voice, right in her ear, is faint. “No. I had no idea.”

or: Olethra and Max accidentally stumble upon some interesting information. And honestly, isn't it their duty to go digging?

“I saw them once,” she says. “But you’re more beautiful.”

“Saw who?” Em sounds concerned. She shouldn’t; Sofie would hate to make such a beautiful woman so worried.

“Th’angels,” she says. The stars are still swimming all around. Something’s coming up, kinda like throw up. She doesn’t think she’s gonna be able to stop it.

    Summary

She conjures up all her strength, unearthing her head to grab her phone and wincing at the onslaught of light the action produces. She doesn’t bother putting on her glasses, ignoring all her unread messages and fumbling with the screen until she finds the first chat she sees with Emily’s contact photo attached.

Somgithng came up, she types. Need to postppone

She watches blearily as the text bubble goes from Sending to Sent, and then her phone rings.

“I’m coming over,” Emily starts, no preamble.

“Hey,” Siobhan croaks, “good morning Emily; how’s it going Emily?”

“D’you want a second helping of that?”

Bert considers Marya openly as she scarfs down her stew like a woman starving. She looks different like this, softer. More open, or at the very least more obvious about how closed off she is. There’s grease scuffed across one cheek and something dark under her fingernails. Her spoon clatters loudly, her gulps echoing in the relative silence of the galley. She lowers her bowl from her mouth, eyes lifting to appraise him over its rim. She says nothing.

there’s a day aelwyn looks up from her spider plant and realises that she hasn’t spoken to her younger sister in four years.

nothing leads up to it. it’s a normal day—she goes to work, shelves some books, comes home, throws a freezer meal in the oven for dinner, gets comfortably high, and washes her dishes before the drugs kick in. her cats are fed. her plants have new growth on them, which at least means it’s not too late to salvage them after she didn’t water them for three weeks straight during her last depressive episode. she’s got no plans tonight other than making a strong cuppa and sitting down in front of some really shitty reality television. and then her eye catches the date.

    Summary

“Like hell I was gonna let you go without eating something. You can’t survive off caffeine alone, kid.” She squints at Adaine’s mug. “You want any milk or sugar for that?”

Adaine isn’t going to be drinking it, no matter how much she wants to. She opens her mouth to say as much. “Um, sure,” she finds herself saying instead.

Lydia rolls her way back to the kitchen. “Well, which one?” she asks, hand stretched halfway to the fridge.

“Both?” Adaine asks timidly, mouth betraying her again. Gods, at the least it would be nice if you could be wrong confidently, she thinks. What’s the matter with you?

    Summary

On her own, Van never would’ve gone down to bloody Katur. She would’ve spent a pleasant evening with Bert in the hot tub, maybe helped him whip up a flight or two of aioli, and watched the nut pigs roll ‘round on deck. Even with Wealwell and Freyja onboard, she thinks it wouldn’t’ve been a half-bad way to spend a night. Instead, she’s here dropping things ‘cross the floor ‘cause she’s lost five fingers in one go.

She doesn’t recognise her reflection anymore. It’s like every time she sees herself, something is different—her eyes are darker, she’s rimmed in shadow, her blummin’ arm is gone. Something is happening to her, something far beyond her grasp. Everything Van’s known about herself, her family, her curse—all of it’s out the window now. The worst part is how good it feels.

on the freedom of becoming something you don't recognise.

    Summary

Van watches Max strain against Marya’s grasp, his face turning red with effort, the tendons in his neck jumping out. “I will never. Don’t! Don’t! Don’t!” His pleas get increasingly frantic, sweat beading along his hairline, breath quickening. Van feels hers speed up along with it.

“Oh-kay, he really does refuse to submit,” Marya sing-songs, releasing him and standing up in one swift movement. Like it was never there, her manic grin vanishes, replaced by something much more approachable. Van feels the loss in her stomach. “I thought that might get him.”

The tonal whiplash is stunning. Van’s still reeling, images of Marya’s gloved hands in Gotch’s hair imprinted on the back of her eyelids every time she blinks. Her grip on Max’s ankles loosens just slightly, and he pulls them free.

answering the age-old question: fellas, is it gay to tackle a man at the exact same time as your captain?

    Summary

“I can’t just leave my ship,” she protests, though it sounds weak to her own ears.

Comfrey leans forward again in one sudden movement, gaze sharpening. “Hasn’t the ocean taken enough from you already?” Her voice is close, intimate like she’s confiding something of grave importance. “You don’t owe it anything, you know. Don’t you want to experience true freedom?”

Van thinks of the deep, and then, newly, of the stars. Across the pub, her mum’s worried eyes rove over her face. She takes a deep breath in, then lets it out.

    “Tell me more,” she says.

Van's life changes when she meets Comfrey. Years later, it changes again when she meets Marya.

Norman curses as he gets dragged over a particularly aggressive bump in the stone hallway beneath him. “Watch it!” he spits.

“So sorry!” Princeps Zortch apologises, almost managing to sound contrite. “I actually can’t steer this.”

“Can’t you just mind control the dog?” he growls.

Aurora Nebbins, who has never been controlled by anything a day in her life, surges forward with renewed energy. The makeshift sled attached to her back hits another rock and catches air.

Norman gets handcuffed to the Princeps. Aurora Nebbins gets an early dinner. Gunnie gets to reference a meme.

    Summary

She doesn’t want to begrudge him for it. Whether or not he says it, she knows it’s a sore spot, one that he and his mother are always trying to compensate for when they have any of the kids over for meals. Riz eats like a goblin. It’s not a bad thing, just a neutral observation.

It’s also making noises that make her feel like her skin is being flayed from her body. She feels like a raw, exposed nerve, holding herself stiff in the backseat. The harder she tries not to think about it, the more it becomes the only thing she notices, in a horrible feedback loop that never ends.

Adaine has misophonia. She's also trapped on a never-ending summer road trip to save the world. What could go wrong?

    Summary

Kristen Applebees stands in her bedroom. It just so happens that today, the 13th of April, is a date that holds no meaning to her and doesn’t trigger any kind of instinctive mammalian response in her body at its uttering. All the better for her, because today she’s on a mission.

It’s not a mission to put her clothes away, although it might be nice to see the floor every once in a while. It’s not even a mission to stalk her ex, Tracker, on Fantasy Instagram, which she’s been managing to do less frequently. Instead, it’s a mission to figure out what in Cassandra’s name is up with her friends.

Your name is KRISTEN APPLEBEES and your friends have been acting SUSPICIOUS lately. It is your DIVINE DUTY, PROBABLY, to collect EVIDENCE in order to try and figure out what is happening. How will you proceed?

    Summary

Fig is bored. Her samples are taking so long to assay, which is maybe her fault for running so many at once. In her defense, it’s always worth testing in triplicate, and she’s got enough blood for it. She snickers to herself—yeah, she’s got the blood. To be clear, it isn’t hers—at least, not usually. If she sometimes accidentally pricks herself with an uncapped needle when the boat rocks and then runs it for her FFA count, that’s just natural human curiosity, baby!

Natural human curiosity is now leading her to leave her lab and go stick her nose into somebody else’s business. Fascinating how that works. She pokes her head out the door and looks up and down the hallway like she’s in a spy movie.

    Summary

“Ah, the new captain! Well as I live and breathe!” Vanellope keeps hold of her hand, grin not subsiding at all. “Call me Van, please.”

Scrapsylvania is a place of half-smiles. There is nothing halved about this: when Van fixes Marya with her full attention, her grin populates her entire face, contorting each of her features with the force of her joy. Her eyes crease so far they almost become invisible, her nose wrinkles, her cheeks dimple. Even her ears shift, her whole countenance transformed by her mirth. When she smiles, Van is radiant with it. Marya wishes, briefly, she could raise her hand and shield herself from this, too.

Marya's world changes once when she joins the Wind Riders. It changes again when she meets Vanellope Chapman.

“Gorgug let me in.” The pink light of the Quokki Pets home screen washes over the scales on Mary Ann’s thumbs. An ache builds in Fig’s jaw as she grinds her teeth.

    “No. I opened your door.”

    Summary

There is a note out of place on her floor.

It sits, innocently enough, beneath her perch, long since cold from her leaving this morning. Ayda has been looking directly at it for a few minutes now, head cocked. She would know if she had dropped one of her notes earlier. She always knows. Her memory is quite keen. She certainly did not write it.

Despite this, it is, tauntingly, written in her own hand. It’s shorter than what she usually writes herself, and slightly cramped, like she was trying to get her message out quickly. Her mind flashes to her father and Ayda considers whether chronomancy could be involved. Perhaps this is a warning from her future self. The pulse of her Detect Magic washes through the room, coming up empty. Well, drat. There’s nothing else for it, then.

Begrudgingly, Ayda walks closer, talons clicking over wood planks. When she bends down to pick it up, the tips of her wings brush the floor.

It is two sentences, both three words, each more confusing than the last. Ate yday morn, the first says. Check on Aelwyn.

    Summary

Once, there was a railroad line. It ran, iron and steel gleaming in the sun, over a series of hewn timber rail ties as far as the eye could see. Under it laid crushed stone and slag ballast, radiating heat in shimmering waves. A whip snake basked on top. Beneath the ballast, exposed near the ties, smaller stones of the subgrade poked through, pale and shining. The shoulder spilled out unevenly over the browned, wilted grass, casting faint shadows uselessly onto the cracked earth. The railway looked like it had been fouled for a very long time. Nobody moved to replace it.

    ...

This story is a tragedy. It always has been. It is also a love story. It has always been this, too. But perhaps, most importantly, it is a story about the world the way it could be, and maybe even the world the way we could make it.

or: Fig is a poor girl working on a song. Ayda is a hungry girl looking for something to eat. You already know how this story ends.
