Summary

Summary
After an admittedly horrible Christmas and a tense few following days, Mu Qing and Feng Xin go to Shi Qingxuan’s New Year’s Eve party. Being at a house party is bad enough, and Mu Qing is desperate enough to get through to midnight that he takes up He Xuan’s offer of smoking a joint. The game of Never Have I Ever when they go back inside just about finishes him off, he almost falls back into bad habits he swears he was past, and the last few months of the year might as well have been foreshadowing for how terribly the year was going to end.
Feng Xin, as always, wishes him a happy new year anyway, despite all that; sitting on a park bench, keeping Mu Qing’s head up both physically and emotionally.

Summary
Two years ago, Feng Xin learnt precisely why Mu Qing hates Christmas. Sure, he had an admittedly decent Christmas that year, and last year too, but this year, Mu Qing has frankly had a shit few months — from university going downhill to embarrassing himself in front of his friends at his birthday a couple of months back. He tries to make plans, but when his mother ends up in hospital and the plans fall through, he’s left with two options: stay alone, or go to Feng Xin’s family.
An argument ensues, Mu Qing says and does things he really doesn’t mean, if it wasn’t for feeling horrible in the first place. This year, his Christmas is frankly shit. Not this time, but perhaps one day in the future, he can hope to heal; surely things can’t get much worse, right?

Wrapping a supporting arm around his back, Feng Xin rubbed his shoulder soothingly and sighed. ‘I think someone’s still a bit drunk.’
‘Yeah. You.’
‘True. But you too.’
Mu Qing grunted, and even managed to make such a primal, guttural noise sound sarcastic.
‘I’m not the one leaning against the person I hate,’ Feng Xin pointed out.
‘You’re the one who married the person you hate.’
That startled a laugh out of him, his heart jumping and fluttering in his chest like an absolute fool at such an absurd notion. ‘Eh? What are you talking about? How drunk are you?’
Feng Xin and Mu Qing make the seven-hour flight to Las Vegas for Shi Qingxuan and He Xuan's (secret) wedding. Mu Qing copes with a severe, newly-discovered phobia of flying by drinking through it. Feng Xin is left to deal with the fallout.

“But what’s so special about today? We spend most days together. We literally live together! I don’t understand why—“
Realization seems to hit Feng Xin with full force, making his eyes widen and his lips part slightly.
“Oh.”
“Yes, Feng Xin, oh indeed,” Mu Qing sneers.
“It’s Valentine’s Day today, isn’t it?” Feng Xin asks stupidly.
or, Feng Xin forgets about Valentine’s Day and Mu Qing isn’t pleased about that in the least.

A lot.
Mu Qing is guarded and hollow after losing his mother but he's content in his darkness until he moves in with the Fengs, and a light pierces his comfortable solitude in the form of his soon-to-be stepbrother.
Two people who can never be together fall in love.
