Marion sits on Sean’s right, where he can see him without turning all the way, and he hooks his legs through the bars and swings them out into the empty air. From the top of the fire escape, the tallest part of the building, they can look out and see all of the Soffit. Sunshine’s kind of hard to come by around here, under the Eaves, but there’s this single ray of sunlight that seems to follow Marion wherever he goes, lights up the little bits of brown in his hair and when he turns, it lights up his eyes like the piece of sea glass Sean found once in Auntie Bee’s front yard and keeps on his nightstand.
“Heard Eddy Carr kicked your ass today,” Mar says, after a minute. “What happened?”
