    Summary

The second Riku wakes up, he knows it’s going to be a bad day.

There’s an ache in his side that’s sending telling shocks through his nerves in a familiar way. Not like he had slept on it wrong, but a deeper, more base pain, one that digs through skin and tears through bones and throbs and sparks.

Out of all days, did this really have to happen now? Of all the days, why is it now that his old injuries choose to rear their ugly heads?

    Summary

Riku doesn’t just get what he wants without working for it; that’s not how his life works. If he gets what he wants something awful happens, and under no circumstances can he allow anything else awful to happen to Sora. He’s been through enough for lifetimes.

But gods he wants him so badly. He wants to hold him close and tell him everything will be okay the way he’d always dreamed of, to kiss him silly and shower him with all the devotion and love he’s held back for all these years, to make him feel special and loved and adored the way Sora has always deserved, but his stupid heart can’t take the strain of all the emotions he’s feeling at getting his entire worldview completely shattered.

(Post-Canon: Sora surprises Riku with a sudden confession, and Riku’s poor heart has a hard time accepting it)

    Summary

"I'm sorry," Sora says, for maybe the hundredth time since they returned from the Dark Margin. He knows he's the reason for Riku's injuries. It keeps him awake just as often. Maybe that's why he was up when Riku wandered by; maybe he was thinking about the treehouse, too. Wondering whether he could grab a handful of that old magic instead of a handful of splinters, if only he crossed the sea, climbed up, and closed his eyes on the right moon-washed night.
