He’s looking out of the window up at the light on in C-Wing when you finally glance over your shoulder at him and decide you don’t care if he deserved it or not. You will take this man back to your apartment by the harbour and you will give him soup because there will be no fresh food until you go to the supermarché tomorrow, and you will set him up on the couch with the old spare duvet from the airing cupboard, and you will check the dressings on his wounds again in the morning.
And that you do.

An awkward silence spread through the main office of the 41st precinct. Kim stared back at Trant's beaming face, and at the handful of crisp, neatly folded leaflets he was holding up. The rest of the C-wing was was staring at him as well, most of them from across reports containing more or less horrific tales of murder and human misery. Kim gave them a scrutinising glance. Yes, Mack was most definitely holding an evidence bag with what looked like human hair in it.
Precinct 41 gets to go to an upscale spa. It has cucumbers.

'Well?' Grell wants to demand, impatient. 'Are you the one that reaps the reapers?' But the only noise that comes from her ruined throat is a sickening gurgle, a fresh wave of blood dribbling from her lips.
The Undertaker looks at her like some sort of long-lost treasure.
“Finders, keepers,” he whispers.
Vaguely, she knows that those words should terrify her. But she doesn’t have enough blood left in her brain to register the feeling. Instead, as he tenderly picks her up with one arm around her back and the other under her knees, just before the pain of being moved makes everything go black, her only thought is how romantic it is, that she gets to die in someone’s arms this time.

The angle isn’t ideal — there’s only so much Harry can lean back in a desk chair whose recline has been robbed by age — but they make it work. Kim comforts a sleeping Harry as he endures another one of his nightmares. Soon enough, Harry begins to experience a very different kind of dream. Kim helps him through that one, too.

PHYSICAL INSTRUMENT: You’re both men, are you not? Men in your early forties, but that’s nothing - and twice a week, Kim takes longer than usual in the shower.
CONCEPTUALIZATION: Fifteen minutes. Usually in the mornings, before you drag yourself off your couch.
DRAMA: He likes the plausible deniability. You’re not up yet, he doesn’t have to feel guilty.
INLAND EMPIRE: Sometimes, though, he does it at night. One night - the dog days of summer, he can’t sleep, no one in the entire city is sleeping, if the irritability of the precinct, the circles under everyone’s eyes, and the crime rate is to be believed - he gets up and goes into the bathroom. You’re almost asleep, drifting, but wake to Kim’s bare feet padding through from bedroom to bathroom.
PERCEPTION: You hear the groan of pipes, the sound of water hitting the tub. The pull of the shower curtain.
