Summary
He was rambling. He could hardly believe it of himself. Ethan Hunt did not talk about himself like this. There was enough going on everywhere else. But he was drunk and his bones ached and he could taste blood at the back of his throat and he was blissfully happy that they were alive. He was old and tired and deserved to indulge.
“But I did want it. Claire was beautiful, but I would not have done it if I weren’t drawn to the two of them.”

Summary
And it’s no different now. Because Buck is a good friend - the best friend Eddie has ever had the privilege of having. He’s been the one sure thing in his and Chris’s lives since they came to LA nearly a decade ago, and the hungry thing in Eddie’s chest that thrives off of each moment spent in proximity to him is spoiled rotten with his easy affection and loving companionship. And that’s enough. It has to be enough, because Buck doesn’t - can’t possibly - feel the same way.

Summary
When they're inside, they both sit down on the edge of the bed, and there's a moment where they just stare at each other. It's somewhat comforting, that Buck looks as lost as Eddie feels. It soothes something in him. "Um." Eddie doesn't finish his sentence.
"I'm going to kiss you now," Buck announces, and it's so formal that it makes Eddie burst out laughing. Buck whacks him gently on the shoulder. "Don't laugh at me, I'm trying to be respectful."

Summary
“Maddie and I are doing dinner with the Lees,” Chimney says. “They’re gonna spoil the kids, and then we have to get Jee to sleep somehow.”
Eddie is glaring at the pricing page when the thought hits. “Is Buck going with you?”
Chimney freezes. “Buck. Right, Buck.”
“You forgot your own brother-in-law?” Hen mocks. “That's really the Christmas spirit, Chim.”
“They won't care if he comes. I'll just text Maddie, and we'll get that sorted.”
“No,” Eddie says, and not only because he's looking at a good deal on a flight and two hotel rooms. “I'll invite him to come with us.”
Or: Eddie brings Buck home for the holidays. He's a safe harbor amongst Diaz family drama.

Summary
“Eddie,” Maddie says. “I know our kids are different ages, and our situations are different, but — it kind of sounds like you need something else besides your kid and work, too.”
Well, I used to have a best friend, Eddie thinks, then pushes the thought away. “I … I have other things. But Chris and the job are definitely the most central right now.”
"You know, you can’t put yourself last all the time, Eddie.” She laughs a little. “Straight from my therapist’s mouth to your ears! Ooh — you know what? I’ve got a great idea.”
“Oh?”
“You should come to book club. It’s something I do with my parent friends. We take turns hosting, and it’s my turn!”
Sometimes the best part about reading is getting to learn more about yourself.

Summary
"What if I never get better? What if I always feel like this?"
Buck finally looks back up at him, vulnerability and compassion clear on his too-expressive face.
"I don't know," he says honestly. "I don't…" he shudders, gives a tiny shrug of his shoulders and tries again. "I don't have an answer for that, man. It's been seven months for me and I still feel…like this."
"Like what?"
Buck just shrugs again, then mumbles, "Not myself."
And Eddie doesn't know what to say to that either, because this is the only version of Buck he's ever known.
Or: Buck and Eddie meet at grief group.
