Summary
“Sorry,” He managed, nearly choking on unfallen tears. Hockey players don’t cry. Russians don’t cry. Ilya Rozanov did not cry.
But here was Shane, who had known him for years. Who took everything seriously, who bunched it up between those dark brows in a glorious furrow and figured it out analytically. Who had never said “no”, even when he probably wanted to. Even when he probably– definitely– should have.
And for perhaps the first time in his adult life, Ilya let himself be small. He tucked his chin into Shane’s chest and folded his arms across his back and focused only on the steady heartbeat thumping next to his cheek. A tear streaked down his jaw and he only noticed when Shane’s thumb delicately drifted to catch it under his chin.
Words failed him as he looked up into Shane’s soft, open face as if it were the gates of heaven; his exhale was enough to draw Shane’s lips to his own.

Summary
Today, though, Shane told himself he hated him. He hated that Ilya left. Hated that he said nothing. Hated that he’d made Shane feel disposable.
Sometimes Shane imagined flying to Russia, knocking on Ilya’s door, punching him square in the face and telling him exactly how much he hated him. But he knew the truth. Ilya would open the door. Shane would forget every practiced speech. And he would kiss him. Melt into him. Give himself over like he always had. Be fucked by him. And even if it was the last time they would fuck, at least he would know it was the last time this time.
Shane didn’t hate Ilya.
He hated that Ilya still lived in this quiet, unmovable place in his heart. It was the place that wouldn’t let him move on, wouldn’t let him heal, wouldn’t let him forget.

This story is canon through the 2014 Russian Olympics, then diverges. After Russia, Ilya ghosts Shane and never returns to the U.S., remaining behind to care for his father. Both Shane and Ilya carry the weight of their shared past into the present, set in June 2017.

Summary
“What did we say?” Hayden said, using his best approximation of a stern dad voice as he approached them. “No iPad after lights out.” Damn, they needed to change the passcode on that thing again. How did Ruby keep figuring it out?
The little terror in question was looking up at him with wide eyes, her face lit spookily from beneath by the screen. “Uncle Shane got hurt,” Ruby whispered.
Hayden's POV. Set during Dig Two Graves chapter 5.
