With no one to take care of a bedridden Sonic, Shadow is forced to spend the weekend taking care of his rival until Tails comes back. While the Ultimate lifeform's intention is to have as minimum interaction as possible, Sonic's dopey, and therefore unfiltered, state makes that much too impossible.

Summary
Sage is dead.
That is the aftermath of fighting The End. Sage is dead, by Sonic's own fault, and it's a guilt he cannot live with. He has to fix it. Even if fixing it means throwing a copy of his memories into the past in hopes that he can learn from his own mistakes.
It's one island. One fight. That's all he has to do. He just has to do it right, and he'll have saved Sage. And he can pretend like nothing ever happened, and like he was the perfect hero Sonic the Hedgehog is supposed to be all along.
Simple as that.

The wars are over. Eggman is quiet. The world is rebuilding, putting up lights and paper lanterns and calling it a Winter Festival.
Sonic should be happy. No one is chasing him. No city is burning. Tails is safe, Amy’s humming carols, the Master Emerald is stable, and Shadow hasn’t tried to punch him in at least three days.
So why does it feel worse when things are calm?
When a strange snowstorm hits Station Square and the Chaos Emeralds start resonating again, everyone assumes it’s just another mission.
For Sonic, it’s something scarier: the universe asking him to stand still long enough to see what’s left of him when he’s not running.
