Summary
Six months after the company has reclaimed the misty mountain, the halls of Erebor, once again, thrum with life, laughter and the steady rhythm of Dwarven trade. It is well over-due that Thorin Oakenshield, Son of Thrór, Son of Thráin, King under the Mountain, confronts an injury he received during the Battle of the Five Armies. One he has done his best to put to the back of his mind.
Namely, the wound to his foot.
Despite Óin’s, and the rest of the company’s, best efforts, Thorin refuses to use the cane that will ease his pain and prevent further damage. It will take an equally stubborn hobbit to convince him otherwise and to reveal that some battles are best not fought alone.
In doing so, uncomfortable truths are laid bare and moments of quiet longing surface. Amid Erebor’s rebuilding is a new chance for them to heal and begin building a future in which love, slowly and patiently, is ready to grow.

"Thorin was the essence of so many Buckland oddities, distilled into one misfortunate young hobbit, much to his infinite embarrassment.
Built like a stork, his father had said once, in an example of Thrain Brandybuck’s usual tactless humour. All beak and legs."
Thorin Brandybuck, just recently come of age, still lives in his family’s smial in Buckland, with his parents and two younger siblings. Thorin is an odd duck amongst his relations and neighbours-- unsociable, grumpy, shy, and awkward. And beyond that, he looks rather strange even for a Bucklander, strongly favouring the thick, dark haired build of his Stoorish blood.
It defies all sense and reason why Bilbo Baggins, an exemplar of all the respectable traits Thorin lacked, would ever desire a friendship with him.
Bilbo, as Thorin discovers, is not always as sensible as he appears.

Summary
"Are you certain this is singing?" Bilbo asked, wincing at the cacophony of Lake-town in celebration.
Thorin granted him a smile. "They seem to be. You disagree?"
"Give me a bit of your ale and I might change my mind."
A laugh, an actual laugh! Hard to hear beneath the merriment, but true and strong. Bilbo vowed that instant he would hear that laugh properly. In so noisy a hall, that meant Bilbo would have to make him laugh very loudly indeed.
