It wasn’t until they were halfway across the control zone that Caelus felt far enough away from Asta to breathe again. They leaned against a nearby pillar, instinctively grabbing at the shirt over their heart. Their chest ached. It hurt. Looking at her, at that pretty face, those eyes. It hurt. It stung. She was terribly, horribly beautiful, and Caelus couldn’t stand it.
Their knees started to buckle, and Caelus let the artificial gravity drag them to the floor. Clutching at their shirt, pressing their fist into their chest, breathing hard and staring at the ceiling, their back against the pillar.
They hated her. They wanted to trade their life for hers. They wanted to open her eyes instead of their own.
“Kafka,” they mumbled, through the furious agony that threatened to blind them with tears. They searched for the question they most wanted to ask, and the only thing they could think to say was “why?”
The bustling silence gave them neither mercy nor relief.
