“What—“ Peter tries to look back, but Sam easily intercepts his head turn and forces his eyes to stay trained ahead. “What did I do?”
There’s a little silence. The only noise now is the sound of their footsteps and the distant hum of the still-working parts of the city.
He can almost feel Bucky and Sam passing the ball between each other. He can feel them exchanging a glance and an unspoken truth. Finally, Sam squeezes his shoulder and puts it out there.
“You panicked.”

“God, no, but you—you’re—“ Mike heaves an enormous sigh and raises his eyes to the heavens, “you seem stressed. And I was trying to be nice and let you talk about how my sister dumped you because you picked me up at school and made me soup, but whatever, I’ll never try to be nice to you ever again.”
Steve isn’t sure if he should be annoyed or touched or amused, so he just tosses a pillow at Wheeler and lands it square in his face, which makes the kid give an indignant, hoarse yell.

But everyone else is functioning. Steve is turning in empty tests and he’s taking walks to places he’s never been. He’s carrying a baseball bat imbedded with nails everywhere. He’s doing perimeter checks in his own home.
Maybe what he needs is exposure therapy. Like, maybe if he goes into the tunnel now, he’ll see that it’s just an empty old dirt hole. No bleeding kids, no interdimensional monsters, no flashing lights. And he’ll be normal again.

"It’s like learning to surf, remember?” Jace whispers as he dips his fingers in white, silky paint and drags them across Simon’s cheeks, marking him as a warrior of the holy resistance and at the same time sending shivers down Simon’s spine. There’s war drums in the distance, reverberating so loud that Simon can feel their calls deep within his chest. “Simon, look at me.”
He looks up at Jace’s eyes. They burn above the white on his cheeks, like twin golden suns rising above calm sea water. “No one ever put armor on me when I was surfing.”

“The boathouse?” Magnus clarifies, cocking his head to the side. “What do you mean?”
“Oh.” Simon suddenly becomes very interested in the loose thread on Magnus’ couch cushion. He picks at it with a shaky hand, which is alarmingly cold when Magnus lays his own hand over it as a signal for Simon to explain. “I guess you didn’t know. Yeah, uh, since I vamped out I figured I shouldn’t stay with my mom anymore, so I live in the boathouse by the Jade Wolf now. No big deal.”

He watches Luke mill around the kitchen fluidly, knowing where everything is as if he’s been there a hundred times. And he has, actually, because since they bought the apartment Luke has been checking up on them as if he’s expecting them to burn it down.
But Jace had always assumed that Luke checking on them was really just Luke checking on Simon. Jace was there, in the background, but he was never the priority.
