Summary
Then Buck said, almost to himself, “And I don’t know how to help because I don’t know what it’s like to kill someone. Neither of us do.”
There was a long pause.
Eddie didn’t flinch. Didn’t look away. Just said, “That’s not true.”
Buck frowned, confused. “What do you mean?”
“You’re wrong,” Eddie said, voice quiet but firm. “I do.”
Or,
Buck doesn't know how to help Maddie process Doug's death. To deal with what she had to do on that mountain. So he enlists help from those that actually might understand what she's going through, in a way that he can't.Bookmarked by herownwrite

Summary
Evan—Buck, because he grew up while she was stuck in place—is holding her hand. He hasn't let go in… Maddie isn't sure how long. She is sure that she survived. She is sure that Chimney’s alive. She is sure that Doug isn’t. Beyond that, she isn’t sure of much.
Buck’s leg is bouncing.“You can get up if you need to,” Maddie says. Speaking makes her throat sore, but the silence is worse.
He’s shaking his head before she even finishes. “No, I’m, uh… No, I’m fine. I’m fine.”
“I don’t think you’ve sat in one place for this long in your entire life.”
“...I do kinda have to go to the bathroom.”
Maddie could make fun of him. Tell him you don’t need to raise your hand and ask, or something like that, but she knows why he won’t just get up and leave the room. He’d have to put a wall between them. He’d have to let go of her hand.

Summary
“Maddie? What’s wrong? Are you okay?”
Her head is spinning, thoughts flinging in a million directions. Tears blur her vision. Past them, fuzzy and faint, she can see the ceramic mug shattered on the ground— a scratch on her palm dripping red, red blood onto the tile as white as pure snow. Big Bear, running, the knife— cold metal piercing her skin before she can really process it; agony she’s suffered a million times and never before; a thought buried beneath the pain: this is what it must have felt like for Chimney before he died. Then the struggle— scrabbling for the knife in the snow— taking the life of the man who took hers — and stumbling, blind and bleeding, across an endless snowscape.
Doug is dead. Doug is dead, she killed him, he’s dead, and Maddie Buckley is newly thirty-five years old heaving out sob after sob on the floor of her home, clinging to the sound of her brother calling out to her both now and in her memories.

Summary
Peter jolts awake when the plane taking his class home flies just close enough to a flock of birds to suck two of them into the engines. He’s barely registered their startled squawks—possibly pigeons? do they even fly this high?—before a sickening thunk reverberates through his chest, metaphorically, and through the birds’ chests, very literally. The plane is fine, barely even registering the impact.
Peter is not.
