Summary
Silently, he cursed Bucky for the weight he pulled in other people’s lives, the way he became a steady foundation despite his glaring instabilities. Crank had fallen prey to it almost immediately in flight school, leaning into Bucky's unavoidable gravity and not pulling back in time. Bucky had caught it, taking it between his teeth like a hunting dog with a prize, and it had been easy to fall together after that, to collide in dark corners and quiet moments.

“I’ve got work to do, Dougie,” Croz ground out lowly, like a warning.
Any other time Douglass would heed it, would back off with a smile and a nod and a promise to drop off coffee and a sandwich later. Not tonight. He wasn’t going to let Croz sit in here and wallow over all their grief alone, flagellating himself with maps and headings and missions until he couldn’t see straight.
“Nothing that won’t be there tomorrow. Nothing that won’t need a clear head.” He sucked in a deep breath and took a calculated risk. “Nothing that’s gonna get Rosie back.”

Bucky wakes up slowly, the grey light filtering past his eyelids not making his head throb for the first time since he got hit across the back of it. His mouth feels dry, his body damp with sweat, but it's no worse than some of his more unpleasant hangovers, and he breathes deeply to take account of all the other aches and pains his journey to the Stalag gave him.
A hand lands on his forehead before he can open his eyes.
"Your fever's broken," someone says, and Bucky leans into the touch, rolls his neck gently to the side so he can blink away the crust of however many hours sleep and actually look at Crank.
