Summary
A Regency AU about first loves, honor lost and restored, and finding your way back to each other against the odds. Or: the young Duke Sugawara and Earl Sawamura are each other’s first friends, and first loves, and the world is on their side. Happily ever after seems close at hand when Daichi confesses to Koushi on his 19th birthday, the future warm and big and bright. That is until a sudden and unexplained political scandal rocks the houses of Sawamura and Azumane, forcing them brutally out of court and Koushi’s life—perhaps forever. Or so he thinks until years later, when Daichi moves into the small hamlet nearby as apprentice to the local blacksmith. Koushi is determined not to lose him again—Daichi is determined not to stand in the way of decorum and propriety, no matter what his heart keeps telling him. Kazuma swallows. Tastes it on his tongue, in his mouth, through his throat. It's sinfully sweet when it slips out: "How drunk are you, anyway?"
Because Ryunosuke is right there, you know. Right there, all warm and flushed against him, little breaths puffing out through his mouth. Had he taken another sip of his drink while Kazuma wasn't looking? His mouth looks wet. As though he had, as though he hadn't wiped his mouth, as though it hasn't dried quite yet. Kazuma could find out for himself.
Ryunosuke blinks. "Uh," he says. Furrows his eyebrows. "Fairly?" A beat. "Why do you ask?"

To say it had been a shock to see Phoenix across the courtroom from him that first time would be an understatement. Phoenix was an old, warm memory gone cold with time and von Karma’s influence. But facing that nervous smile, that brightly determined gaze, had cleared some of the fog. It had forced him to remember that sunlight existed. To realize it lived in too-kind eyes.
The gaze Phoenix fixes him with now is as dark and unsettling as a day that begins without dawn.
While Miles has been making his slow way to spring, Phoenix has fallen into winter.
