“Huh? What about me?” Momota approached the pack in puzzlement. It seemed as though he hadn’t noticed Amami beforehand, so when he got closer, his eyes widened momentarily at the sight of him and his cheeks turned red, but it was gone so quickly that Amami couldn’t do much but shrug it off. Momota flashed a cheesy grin in its place. “Well, uh! Whatever it is, I can help, Akamatsu.”
“That works out then! Momota-kun, you’ll be tutoring Amami-kun after school,” Akamatsu said.
“Huh?!”

Shuichi slid his back up against the headboard of the bed, settling himself into a sitting position. He squinted at the light pouring in through the crack of the door and tried rubbing the weariness from his eyes, mind still hazy. Out of reflex, Shuichi’s hand patted the spot next to him, only to be finally jolted awake by the lack thereof. His eyes scanned the rest of the bed and the rest of the room before returning to the light outside the bedroom.

They were starving. That was reason enough for Zeff to open the Baratie's doors and feed them, whoever the hell they were.
Then he offered them a job, because the waiters and most of the other cooks had all jumped ship again and these guys looked kinda tough and not likely to scare easy. He didn't care if they were refugees of the World Government, he didn't care about their past, he didn't care what else they could do as long as the dishes were cleaned, the soup served, the vegetables chopped and Zeff's rules respected. Oh, and the pigeon had to stay out of the kitchen. That was a must. Give the Health Inspector the wiggins otherwise.
Oddly enough, it did not turn out to be a complete and utter disaster. Strange things happen on the seas.
