“You’re in trouble, Candidate Thousand-Sixty-Nine.”He must be enjoying this, Nicolò thinks bitterly. “It’s obvious, isn’t it?” he replies, trying vainly to slow his descent by changing the trajectory of his fall – no point in landing in the designated spot in pieces.
“Not enough stones and a malfunctioning chute.”
Yusuf’s voice is muffled by static, but Nicolò could imagine the sneer.
“Are you going to tell me about my poor math skills next?” he manages. “Like how I chose brick instead of membrane structure?”
It is silent for a few seconds before he answers. “You should have chosen the membrane. Our dummies would have lived.”
Holy Mother take this man.“Yeah,” he says. “No shit.” It would be nice if he could live now; he’s not a screaming dummy in a simulation.
Then he feels a tug on his pack and looks up to see Yusuf cutting off his defective parachute.
“What are you doing?”
“I have no time to wait for you to get over your pride and ask me for help, Priest.”

So no, they couldn’t outsource that one death. Nicky had killed more people than he could remember, but he needed to make sure of this one.
He finally sits up, putting his rifle down, and winces when his chest rubs against the weight of the Kevlar vest over his hoodie. Even if he wasn’t supposed to be anywhere near danger, Joe insisted he wear full gear. Now, Nicky wishes he didn’t. He doesn’t need to strip it and look down to know there will be wet patches on his undershirt, just around his nipples.
Nicky and Joe leave their family behind so they can tie one last loose end, but there are some side effects Nicky hadn’t anticipated. Fortunately, Joe is there to help him through it.

Once Yusuf let those words out, he knew they had been the wrong ones to say, so he winced at their sound echoing through the cold morning, his teeth chattering as he pressed his mouth shut. He closed his eyes, listening to the river and leaned his forehead against Nicolò’s, begging his forgiveness. For what exactly, he did not know.
He felt the omega’s warm breath against his skin and the trembling of Nicolò’s hands under his and Yusuf tried to find new words, wiser ones, some clever way of sharing that pain too great to name, but his mind was blank, useless. His omega was suffering and Yusuf had caused it, and he had to make it right, but how could he? They had assumed nothing would ever come from their couplings, but what if-
What if that happened again?
As Joe holds a little miracle in his arms, he remembers the times he and Nicky hadn’t been so lucky.
