Summary
Mike let out a wet chuckle. “I’ve only been brave once,” he admitted, keeping his eyes on Will, who had gone back to clutching onto his own chest, but was staring back. “The day we became friends. I think that’s the only time I’ve ever really, truly been brave. I saw you, and I knew I wanted to be your friend.”
Whenever Mike looked back on the fateful day he and Will met, it felt like was experiencing it all over again. He felt himself in his little body, a bundle of nerves in his stomach as he looked at the lonely boy sitting at the swingset. The sun had been bright that day, a golden ray of light caressing the boy, as if trying to comfort him. Mike then ran to the boy, hopped on the swingset, and asked the question that forever changed their lives.
“Do you wanna be friends?”

Then there was Arthur, who was standing on the other side of Uther. His arms were crossed over his chest, his face carefully blank as he stared down at the wooden floor. Merlin could see it, though. The pain and hurt in his crystalline eyes, the way his fingers were gripping onto the material of his jacket. Merlin couldn’t help the shame he felt, despite knowing that he didn’t do anything wrong. He wasn’t a monster, but, for a moment, he felt like he was.

“Breaking news: law enforcement has discovered that Durandal, also known as the ‘French Excalibur,’ was reported missing this morning in Rocamadour, France. Authorities suspect it was taken at approximately 11pm due to sightings of an unknown man dressed in armor walking around the town hours before,” the news anchor reported, a blurry video popping up of a man who was drenched, wearing chainmail and looking around confusedly.
Merlin promptly spewed out his tea.

“Yes, it does! It does to me!” Arthur exploded, ignoring the way Merlin’s eyes widened. “I—you’re not just a servant! You’re… You’re Merlin. My Merlin.”

Mike wants to tell him not to go, and that Chance isn’t worth this kind of time and effort, anyways. He wants to say that this is a little much for a friendly breakfast.
Instead, Mike just says, “Hold on.”
Mike goes over to his closet, pushes the curtain open, and grabs his light blue and gray canvas jacket. He then goes over to Will and stands behind him and says, “Arms.”

It's spring break of their junior year of college, and Mike is actually pretty happy. Will is the perfect roommate, their five loftmates aren't so bad, and the rest of the party is coming to visit over the break.
But then Will bumps into an old classmate who's suddenly interested in him, and Mike is forced to examine why this bothers him so much.
