    Summary

Curses are a fact of life in Bohemia, though in these times of war and upheaval Blessings seem pretty thin on the ground. Yet one of the nobility's best kept secrets is their own curse: children born out of wedlock and unclaimed by their noble parent come out... deformed. Inhuman. Barely more than disfigured beasts. Typically culled before they can grow out of infancy, these cursed children are a rare sight indeed. Perhaps that is why Henry is so misunderstood. Perhaps that is why he tries so hard to find a place among his town and his people.

Perhaps that is why he clings so tightly to the first hand that was held out to him in kindness.

Hans Capon and Henry of Skalitz fall in love without knowing that it's love.

To quote "The Great Escape" by Woodkid, men are meant to be more than the shadows of each other.

    Summary

When Henry didn’t return from Vranik, Hans knew what it meant, but he didn’t want to believe it. He held onto hope, desperate and fragile, even when storming the camp brought no sign of Henry. There was a chance Henry might still be alive, might still keep the promise he’d breathed in Hans’ ear in the moonlight.

    “I’ll come back to you.”

    But he didn’t.

    Summary

“Floremesis,” the apothecary eventually muttered. He looked up, his expression pitying. “Flower petals; you’d best see a priest, lad. Nobody but God can help you.”

A shock ran through Henry like a cold wind, drawing his attention with a snap of focus. “Flower petals?” he repeated incredulously, his throat suddenly dry. “What, like Mary Magdalene?”

He’d never really believed the stories of saints and martyrs coughing up flowers. That was something that happened a thousand years ago, the words inked in Latin scripture on illuminated pages, not to now, not to him.

    Summary

“Baths tomorrow morning,” Hans says. “And you can finish telling me about your monastery adventures. And why it took you so goddamn long to finish your task and return to m—to Rattay.”

Henry takes another sip. “Alright, Sir Hans.”

In the dim glow of light at their table, he can see freckles across Henry’s nose, and some peeling along his hairline from a healing stretch of sunburn. Details he’s missed over the past few weeks. He reaches for him without thinking, then lets his hand drop on the table between them. Henry watches this display with an unreadable expression. A stillness. Outside, the rain continues to fall, loud and clear.

“We must drag Gregor out of you,” Hans tells him.

    Henry nods. “Yes. We must.”

Gregor returns from the monastery on a rainy day.
