Summary
The year is 1643 and the war that lasted nearly 80 years, called the Scorch wars by the populus, has finally come to an end. The leaders of the major powers of the continent of Flora have all gathered in the neutral country of Geum in order to decide the fate of the continent. Here at the Geum Congress, country borders are written and rewritten daily, alliances wrought and then broken with each dinner party. In this world of golden edging and ink pots, some of the most powerful and dangerous people are not the diplomats and kings who argue over drawn maps and wager human lives for plots of land, but rather their companions and spouses, who influence the fate of their world from the privacy of bedrooms and tea rooms, whisper intrigue and gossip in smoky parlours and the opera galleries. Summary
Changbin knew about the animal tattoos. He knew from his parents that the tattoo symbolizes your soulmate, and that when you meet that person your animals will interact with each other. He knows too, that the tattoos appear when you first learn what love is (though that was a vague concept that confused the middle schooler). But the problem was, Changbin had two tattoos, and he knew for a fact that his parents only had one tattoo each. Hyunjin's parents only had one tattoo each, and all his classmates who had their tattoos only had one as well. His parent's had explained to him that this meant he had two soulmates, and although Changbin had been unsure about how that worked, his parents had assured him it was normal and that he wouldn't have to worry about that until he was much older.

“Maomao?” He presses, fingers closing over hers and lowering their joined hands to her lap, and she blinks in surprise at the use of her name. “What is it? What’s wrong?”
“Their technique is sloppy,” she answers honestly. “I feel strain on my heart. They should have targeted the nervous system instead.”
Master Jinshi stares at her like she’s spoken a foreign language he can’t even begin to try and understand. She tries to explain.
“Certain snake venoms cause coagulation of the blood, which could have been effective and made the blood unable to move through my veins, but if the end result is simply making my heart stop beating by targeting the muscles involv-”
“Maomao,” Master Jinshi says, very calmly, “I need you to stop speaking now.”
(an assassin tries to kill jinshi with a poisoned blade that gets maomao instead) (she is obviously much less concerned about this than everyone else)
