    Aaron doesn't register the first symptom.
    Or he does, but he doesn’t think much of it, his mind foggy with pleasure, his forehead pressed against the wall, nails scraping the raw timber. There’s just the slightest itchiness in the back of his throat, surely caused by the cold winter air and strained shouts Aaron has been trying to swallow down unsuccessfully, his voice echoing in a freezing space of the barn.

    There’s more people Robert recognises, now. Some of them come up to him and say hello – Bob, David, Tracy. Others just stare and retire to their tables to whisper unsubtly. Sam and Belle Dingle practically recoil when they see him, and hurry over for what Robert can only imagine is an Emergency Dingle Summit with Chas. By the time the pub’s half full, everyone in it seems to be whispering or texting, some doing both at once.

    Robert’s starting to feel like this was a bad idea.


    Robert's back from prison, only to find that Aaron's married to his long-lost brother - and that he's mysteriously and chronically ill.

    It's possible those two things are related.
