Thus, the offer extended to him by the Lan court. Take his place as the Emperor’s consort, the only one permitted to lay hands upon the Emperor, the only one to share his bed with him while he sleeps, unaware and vulnerable. His last, best line of defense.
Or: Forced by his court to accept a consort, Lan Wangji is certain he has seen enough of the so-called Yiling Patriarch to know what he's getting: an uncouth ruffian. Slowly, he begins to realise that even an emperor's assumptions can be misplaced.

Summary
Lan Wangji grips his leg again, wincing as he places both hands over the open wound. It was throbbing tolerably earlier with the walking and then the fighting against Wen Chao’s people, but now it burns in agony, the phantom pain of teeth sinking into his skin still lingering. The pain bleeding through him is his excuse for when his face openly conveys his shock when he Wei Ying returns, no longer alone.
Wei Ying has Jiang Wanyin’s left arm swung over his shoulder, eyes ranking over his brother with obvious distress as his gaze settles on Jiang Wanyin’s right arm, red with fresh blood and dangling uselessly by his side.
“Why didn’t you pull him to safety?” Wei Ying hisses behind him, and Lan Wangji is pleased with himself for not groaning aloud when he sees Jin Zixuan right behind them, putting his own arm around Jiang Wanyin’s waist as the two men set him down across from Lan Wangji cautiously.
Or, what if Jiang Cheng and Jin Zixuan were stuck in the cave with Wangxian?

No matter. Lan Wangji crushes it easily, enveloping it in his spiritual energy, and then squeezing. Curse averted, Lan Wangji closes his eyes and goes back to sleep. He thinks no more of it.
Two days later, Wei Wuxian arrives in Cloud Recesses.
Or, Wei Wuxian is cursed to feel terrible pain when he and Lan Wangji aren’t touching.

Summary
Before Wei Wuxian can say he will join Jiang Cheng and attend the Wen indoctrination, a letter describing the burning of the Cloud Recesses reaches Lotus Pier.
Realizing the danger to the Jiang sect, he decides to stay behind to help with the defenses and keep his sect safe. While he agonizes over the fate of the disciples sent as little more than hostages, he upgrades the wards of the Jiang sect to stand against the inevitable Wen army.
Lotus Pier will survive, and Wei Wuxian changes his own fate and the fate of the Sunshot Campaign.
