Summary
“I would slap you if I didn’t think you’d enjoy it,” Daniel says.
The words hang in the air and settle like dust around the ruins of the Dubai penthouse. It’s his first words as a vampire–as long as you don’t count the incoherent screaming, and muddled muttering of a mostly-drained journalist.
“The worst of it is over now,” his maker assures.

“You’re wondering what part of the story we’re at,” Armand says, continuing to chart paths in the topography of Daniel’s legs. "Is this the part where I say it’s all a joke, and now that you’ve got me on my knees, I say it’s all just some prelude to sexual deviancy?…Is this the part where I kill you?”
If the boy could feel his stomach, it’d be in knots.
“No, Daniel. We’re not quite there yet."

Summary
In the rainbow of destruction that swirls around Lucy Gray, a white handkerchief waves itself in surrender. The reptiles and rubble are her only observers when she strikes.
“You did it,” he says, pressing his lips into her hair.
“We did it,” she answers, and Coriolanus feels softly at what she’s left in his pocket. He stiffens as his thumb runs over distinctive embroidery: CSX.

Summary
As if the nurse can read his mind, she chooses that moment to look over her shoulder and tell Ilya, “So, just as a head’s up, he’s still pretty loopy from the anesthesia and the pain medication. He’s up and aware but he’s a little, um…”
She pauses for a second, suddenly sheepish, and Ilya can’t wait to hear what the next words out of her mouth are about to be.
“He’s very chatty,” is what she finally lands on, and Ilya can’t help but bark out a laugh.
“And just what is he saying?” Ilya asks, lips spreading into a warm, fond smile, as he imagines all of the possibilities.
“Oh, nothing too crazy,” the nurse says, waving him off in a way that tells him she’s trying very hard to be nonchalant even as there’s an unmistakable edge of amusement curling around her words. “I’ve heard a lot about the adorable furrow you get in between your eyebrows when you’re worried though.”
Ilya wonders if it would be too rude if he broke out into a sprint and left Shane's lovely nurse in the dust.
Or: the one where loopy hospital Shane makes his second appearance and, once again, helps the boys find their way to a conversation they've both been wanting to have about their next chapter.

Summary
I found the room in the facility easily enough. It was one of many. Identical little cells with a bed pushed against one wall and hygiene equipment against the other.
There was no one else being held here. I made sure. Leaving some poor fuck here to die of starvation or run out of power was not something I intended to do. It could hold maybe twenty-five in total, but it honestly looked like it was on its way to being decommissioned.
That was probably why they'd stashed Gurathin here. They didn't think that Preservation Alliance would even know where to look.
Luckily, Preservation Alliance had me.

Summary
He's seen a few other guys get their bell rung. Has seen a couple of them get to their knees almost immediately; has seen them struggle to their feet, then almost wipe themselves out again. Has seen them kneeling with a dazed expression, trying to figure out where they are.
And has seen a couple of them lie there. He's been one of them before.
Swallowing down bile, he asks, "How long did I take to get up?"
Please have tried. Please, please, have been one of those guys kneeling almost immediately. Please have been moving. Please have let Ilya seen that.
A couple of years into playing on the same team together, Shane gets concussed. It's a little bit different this time.

Summary
“I just… I wanna wear short sleeves again. But… but Joel’s gonna think it’s his fault. I-I didn’t think…”
The simple explanation breaks his heart, just a little. Of course she didn’t consider how Joel’s going to react. She’s fifteen, she’s new in town, and she just wants to fit in with the other kids without questions or stares. It shouldn’t be a surprise that she went and maimed herself so she can wear short sleeves.
