Summary
“Peter,” Nightingale says, “it’s nothing, I assure you, it’s -” he steps towards me as though he’s trying to comfort me but wobbles, swaying on his feet. I lean in to steady him without even thinking about it, catching his elbow and keeping him up, and, as I grab him, Nightingale makes a long, low moan.
“Um,” I say, and Nightingale looks mortified.

Summary
Bev looked at me, then leaned down further, and said something very quietly in Nightingale’s ear. I’m always going to remember his expression as she spoke. He’s never actually told me what she said. Neither has she.
I’ve got some pretty solid conjectures, though.

It seems to me that there is nothing more disheartening upon making the discovery that you are in love with your apprentice as realising that your apprentice is in love with you.

Summary
“How do you feel about art?”
I blink at my reflection in the rear view mirror. “Art?”
“There’s an exhibition on in Brixton that I think you’re going to find very interesting,” Guleed answers, and that same someone sniggers in the background again. “Eight o’clock? I’ll text you the address.”
