once again, i'm trying to only read "completed" works for my own mental state, but holy cow is that a struggle for this series. i've only seen two episodes of supernatural, so i can't speak to whether it's in-character, but holy cow, these fics are good. the pacing is spectacular, the prose is evocative, and the character development is superb. i read the first three fics in two weeks, and i'm having to physically restrain myself from reading the fourth one until it's completed (i'll probably cave).

full disclosure: i've seen the first twilight movie, and i've read like 100 pages of the first book. that's about the extent of my actual twilight engagement. also, i have not read works 3-18 in this series. that being said, the first two are spectacular, so i had to write this down before too much time had elapsed. I read "Luminosity" and "Radiance" in three days (18 december to 20 december 2020). and i could tell from the first few chapters that this retelling/au/whatever made so much more sense. i actually found myself rooting for the protagonists, instead of wanting them to lose (which is what happened with the original book) or laughing uncontrollably (which is what happened with the movie). also, the worldbuilding is spectacular, and the glimpses you get into side characters' lives are phenomenal.

    Summary

Taking place many years after canon in an alternate universe in which there was no second rebellion, this series focuses on original characters (mainly victors) in an exploration of the world of Panem.

Each story can be read on its own, or as part of the series. The exception is "What Came Next" which is a direct sequel to "The Year After."

I ran out of room in this series description to include all the information I wanted (such as the preferred reading order, if you were interested in reading the entire thing), so I made a separate "work" to house information about this series:

    Bookmarker's Notes

so far, i absolutely love this series. i only read completed works because i have anxiety and need to read through stuff in one sitting, but i'm going to put my comments in this summary for the ones i've read. also, the author gave me a shoutout at the end of fic #4 (The Year After), and it cured my depression, so.

#1 (The Year After): OOF. this was the first one i read (clearly), and i was hooked. i read it in an afternoon (16 december 2020), and i fell in love. honestly, i almost forgot that this wasn't actually canon (but i could say that for this whole series). i especially liked juniper's and pitch's relationship, and the fact that it was not explicitly romantic. it felt like a trauma bond to me, honestly, but it was so incredibly interesting to watch them try to develop a healthy friendship after everything. also, ROSA! i may have teared up for like the entire last part of the story because holy crap, sooooo good!

#2 (A Collision of Past and Future): um, i loved this one too? once again, read it in an afternoon (17 december 2020). you can see the finish dates get closer and closer together because i was so invested. i really loved all three sisters by the end, which was honestly super surprising to me, considering how the beginning was. the pacing with regards to the memory loss was spot-on, and it flew by.

#3 (The Illusion of Life): HOLY COW, this one brought up so many emotions, and i'm still processing it (17 december 2020). not saying the others didn't, because they for sure did, but wow. if you've read these (or wrote them, hi!) you know what i mean. this one got me. i gotta sit with it, but man, it was so freaking good (i keep saying that, but it's honestly true).

#4 (What Came Next): okay, first of all, this author keeps saying that they don't know how to write romance, but they are CLEARLY MISTAKEN. as someone who's about juniper's age, the thought of a semi-functional romantic relationship with someone almost twice my age kinda creeped me out at first (ngl), but it WORKED. i was genuinely rooting for juniper to just realize her feelings already, and honestly, that's all a good romance is about. but it's not just romance in this one, and the (SPOILERS!!!) surprise adoptions of those ridiculous children were so amazing. also, the twists with quintus, AGH SO GOOD!!! i've ignored my visiting relatives all day (4 april 2021) to read this one, but holy cow was it worth it. i'm super excited to read the rest of the works in this ongoing series.

hopefully i'll add more as the additional works in this series are finished!

edit (26 June 2023): i'm still alive and have been reading these faithfully as they come out, don't worry haha. school has been time-consuming, but every once in a while, the posting schedule lines up with when i need an excuse to do nothing for a weekend and binge a work in this series. i've recommended this series to several of my friends who are new to the fanfic world, and i maintain that this is still one of the best series / works of art i have ever encountered. i always look forward to the next :)

    Bookmarker's Notes

still a tbr (as of 24 november 2020), but i'll hopefully update this bookmark. i'm super excited for this take on hermione

i've read book one (as of 29 november 2020) and LOVED IT. the way that hermione deals with her giftedness is a portrayal that hits almost too close to home for me, and i wish that my middle-school self could have read it and felt like she wasn't alone in her complicated feelings about her intelligence. also, her realization about cedric's view of her was TOO REAL for me. i graduated a year early, and so often, i've felt like i was just a curiosity and not seen as a real intellectual equal (for some people, others were so incredibly phenomenal), and it HURTS because some of them are ATTRACTIVE, okay? but overall, i love it and can't wait to read Lady Archimedes (i'm holding it over my own head as a reward for when i get my christmas presents wrapped, but i'm sure i'll devour that one too).

i finished book two, Lady Archimedes, on 11 december 2020, and it somehow got better? the character development, as expected, continued in a natural progression, and i loved the additional spells and magical lore that the author added to the Arithmancer-verse (it's all canon now, all of it). i must confess, i didn't go into the series shipping hermione and george, but now, i gotta say, this series has won me over. they balance each other so well, and i'm sure that dynamic will continue in the next fic.

i finished book three, Annals of Arithmancy, on 14 december 2020, and can i just say, wow! that was a wild ride and such a great conclusion to this series. i must confess, i didn't relate as much to the characters because of the stage in life i'm in right now, but other than that (which is a me problem, not a story problem), it was sooooooo good. the snippets of life post-war that we get are enough to fill in what happened and leave us to fill in the gaps without feeling like we're missing an integral part of the story. i wish there were more, but honestly, the author did such a good job tying up loose ends that i'm not even mad (sad, yes, but not mad).

this is the dramione one that destroyed me. an incredibly nuanced portrayal of war and ptsd by everythursday (sage). there's smut (a LOT), which i wasn't thrilled about, and the end left me feeling like the relationship was still unhealthy, but that's not the POINT. the point is the evocative lines and intricate plot that i sobbed over.

once again, AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH. there's a lot of things that i resonate with in this one (spencer's anticipation of disappointment, y/n's desire to make everything better, the dESIRE TO BE HELD). the prose is gorgeous, the characters are impeccable, the self-reflection is crippling (jk, jk... unless), it's a whole party.

if my future s/o doesn't know me well enough to plan a proposal at the same time at the same place that i'm planning a proposal, then is it really true love? i'm just saying. but jokes aside, this is how i want to be loved: in the beautiful details that make our story unique (like the comet in this one). also, can i just say, the writing flowed so beautifully, and i'm tearing up even though this is a happy fic, oh no. but it's okay, i'm fine, my view of love hasn't just been shattered or anything, why do you ask?

the FLUFF, the PINING, the POETIC PROSE, it's all here, folks. but seriously, this has some spot-on characterization that actually made me realize what i want in a romantic relationship (we love those fics). also, spence is so cute in this one, but so is the reader, and ugh, it's the same way that you want to squish a cute cat or dog because they're just so adorable; that's how i feel about this fic.

literally some of the most beautiful prose i've ever read. it's totally messing with my view of love, especially romantic love, which i am more than okay with because it's so good. reading it felt like all of the air was sucked out of my lungs in the best way possible, like when someone's revealing a secret that you've waited to hear for years. truly incredible.

edit: i never have typos (like, ever, it's a point of pride for me), and i just went back and fixed two in this comment. that just shows how much this fic messed with me.

This was the first fanfic that made me pause before reentering the outside world (at nine in the morning, no less). The character arcs were superb, the dialogue was so in-character, and it was genuinely enjoyable to read for its own sake, not just because I was already invested in the characters.
