He'd resigned himself to being hurt, or killed, or occasionally being treated like an actual human being, but he couldn't afford that sort of apathy anymore; Jon was the best thing to ever happen to Gerry, and Jon needed him. The fact that he could focus on how Jon's existence benefited him in spite of the circumstances just drove home how vigilant Gerry had to be to ensure nothing slipped past him.
