Life in the labs under Hope's Peak is torturous. It's especially torturous when you're suffering alongside someone else. But when two people are suffering together, it only makes sense for them to start caring about each other. Even if one of them is ready to die, the other won't accept that ending. Izuru will have to have enough survival instinct for both of them; he'll help Hajime, even if he might not want to be saved.

A laughter bubbled up through him. Even while struggling to breathe, he started cackling. So that was it, wasn’t it? The answer to all his questions. The thing he had missed. The thing that made everything he had done meaningless.

After the game, Kokichi and Kaito wake up in a world they have few to no memories of. They may not know themselves, but after what happened in the game, they know each other, and that's something to hold on to.
